Following from the great success of the initiative in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Schools of Sanctuary movement started in the Republic of Ireland in 2019, with the first school awarded in 2020.
Schools of Sanctuary Ireland is a stream of Places of Sanctuary Ireland CLG (RCN: 20107369). Places of Sanctuary Ireland's board of directors oversees the governance of Schools of Sanctuary Ireland's work. PoSI is the umbrella body on the island of Ireland for a network of groups and organisations that share the objective of promoting a culture of welcome and inclusion, a network that includes schools, community groups, higher education institutions, churches, local councils, businesses and other organisations. The PoSI vision is that Ireland will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
